Ezgi Bakçay / Turkey

Dr. Ezgi̇ Bakçay is an art historian and curator from Istanbul; she studied in Istanbul at the universities of Galatasaray, Marmara, and Mimar Sinan. She focuses on art theories of the 20th and 21st centuries, visual and aesthetic theories, the aesthetics of political actions, and the theory of social movements. She has received several prizes and awards, including the Award For Young Critics, Istanbul 2005, and "Exidos," Best Documentary from the Second Istanbul International Architecture and Urban Film Festival. Since 2017 Ezgi̇ Bakçay has been a member of the Association Internationale des Critiques d'Art (AICA). She curated the 26th, 27th, and 28th Tüyap İnternational Art Fair in Istanbul, and as a curator she has represented the Karşı Sanat Collective in Istanbul since 2010. Karşı Sanat is a nonprofit organization that supports artists and intellectuals who wish to express themselves without political or social limitations. The Karşı Sanat Gallery is an open space for international exchange in the contemporary art field in Istanbul.
Dr. Ezgi̇ Bakçay and Bariş Seyi̇tvan were invited to be guests at Villa Waldberta on the suggestion of the Munich group of artists "Rhythm Section." Their residency there follows mutual work-related stays in Diyarbakir and Istanbul in the autumn of 2019. "Rhythm Section" will give these two guest curators insights into the independent scene in Munich, and they are planning a mutual exhibition project.
